Calyces are a new force on the Greek metal scene and their debut record ‘Impulse to Soar’ uses the finest elements of classic 70’s prog rock with a contemporary twist. Low-tuned heavy riffs blast through influences of Alice In Chains and Baroness to create something as groovy as it is energetic.
We grabbed vocalist Manthos Stergiou to talk about some of the best metal bands from their home country that may have slipped under our radar.
Universe217 is one of the best and most vibrant bands in the particular scene, with lots of gigs and steadily frequent record releases. They play a kind of down tempo atmospheric doom rock with an extra dose of personality and with Tanya’s voice stealing the show. Since 2007, the band has released 4 full-length albums, 2 EPs and 2 split-7’’ singles, all welcomed with raving reviews both from Greek and international music media. We had the pleasure to share the same stage with them several times in the past with other bands. Their biggest advantage though is their phenomenal live shows which is a life experience. Definitely worth checking out!
HAIL SPIRIT NOIR
Hail Spirit Noir was founded in the dawn of 2010. They play psychedelic black metal/rock music with a lot of 70’s prog rock influences, retro synths and a strong song-writing personality. They are also the only Greek band that ever played at Roadburn Festival! They have released 4 full-length albums with the latest, ‘Eden in Reversed’, being one of my favourite releases of 2020.
With almost 15 years of active presence in the metal scene, progsters Need are the best kept secret of Greek prog metal! Is one of the most hard working & live/touring bands out there. They have shared the stage with the biggest names of international prog scene such as Fates Warning, Pain of Salvation, Coroner and Evergrey, and they appeared at numerous festivals including the 20th anniversary edition of ProgPower Europe in the Netherlands. These band are preparing for the release of their 5th full-length album titled ‘Norchestrion: A Song For The End’, and I can’t wait to listen to it!
Not a metal band but who cares, definitely worth checking out, whatever music you listen to. Whereswilder is a rock quartet hailing from Athens, Greece. They blend psychedelic and stoner fuzziness with old-school rock hooks and tunes reminiscent of the singer-songwriter era of the early 70’s. They have released 2 amazing full length albums, ‘Yearling’ (2014) & ‘Hotshot’ (2017). Their live credits include shows in prolific Greek festivals, touring both in Greece and abroad and several shows as a support act for major acts. I should also point out the great productions they make in their albums, with a vintage & organic atmosphere that you will not believe they come from 2010’s.
It’s hard to pick up a favourite post-rock band from Greece as we have a lot of good bands in this genre such as we.own.the.sky, Their Methlab, Tuber, Deadfile and more. However, I will choose the incredibe Afformance. These guys offer an atmospheric, cinematic and expansive kind of post rock and they do it with absolute success & remarkable DIY devotion. The have released 5 full length albums, they have toured a lot and shared the stage with numerous of bands such Mono, The Ocean, Grails, Maybeshewill and more.
